Salamun alaikum and Khushali Mubarak
On this auspicious occasion of celebrating the birth anniversary of our beloved Prophet Mohammed s.a.w. (pbuh) and Imam Jaffer As Sadiq a.s., it gives me great pleasure to advise you that, with the blessings of the executive committee, the Alwahda Sports Festival and Carnival is coming back to JCC on labour day weekend September 4th through to the 6th.
The 2013 Alwahda Sports Festival owes its success to two main things. First, the generous financial support of the late GG Merali family as the platinum sponsor, Portserve and The Punjani Charitable Trust as the gold sponsors and many other sponsors. And secondly; the entire community, from the Executive Committee, the Ladies Committee, staff at the JCC office, JCC board chairs, its Committee members, Sports Coordinators, participants, our valued volunteers, community members and friends all helped out in various ways.
For 2015 almost all of the original organising committee members have returned to deliver yet another mega festival with more sports for both the ladies and men. And for those who may choose not participate in competition, there will be plenty of activities that weekend from the Carnival for our younger members, to food stalls, bazaars, and much, much more.
This year Alwahda Sports Festival will be partnering with Special Olympics Ontario who provides year-round sports training and athletic competition for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
Over the past 40 years Special Olympics has grown from a modest program serving local athletes to become the world’s largest movement dedicated to promoting respect, acceptance, inclusion, and human dignity for people with intellectual disabilities through sports.
As you can appreciate an undertaking of this magnitude requires both financial and volunteer support. Over the coming months as our planning solidifies we may be calling on each and every one of you for your support. Please help us in whatever capacity you can so that we can once again deliver a first class mega festival that will be the envy of the North American Khoja community.
And with that please take some time to view our video that captures some of the memories of the 2013 Al-Wahda Sports Festival and Carnival and what you can expect in 2015.
Thank you and wassalaam.
Br. Shafiq Ebrahim
Chairman, Al-Wahda Sports Festival
